There's more than one way to beat the blues

She’s always been proud of her sensual nature. Now it seems to have landed her in an impossible situation. Two lovers…and she wants them both.

Ruby Jones has clear priorities. Her teenage son comes first, then her struggling blues club. Her love life ranks as a distant third, despite the efforts of Zeke Chambers to convince her otherwise. Zeke's the lead singer in her house band, a devoted friend, and an occasional lover. He can drive her wild with desire, but can't get her to make a commitment. Deserted by her cheating ex-husband, Ruby's determined she's going to make it on her own. She's hot-blooded like her bluesman daddy, happy to satisfy her physical cravings, but she's not about to let any man into her heart.

The stranger who takes the stage on open mike night upsets the delicate balance in Ruby's world. From the moment Ruby sets eyes on him, Remy Saint-Michel inspires irresistible lust and inexplicable sympathy. Confused, guilty and worried about her prized independence, Ruby decides that the only way to deal with the two men is to push them both away. Zeke and Remy, however, have other ideas.

A Moment in Time

Unlike many authors, I rarely base my characters on real people. I might borrow a trait here and there from individuals I’ve known, but for the most part both my protagonists and my villains are fictional inventions.

Wild About That Thing is an exception. The character of Remy Saint-Michel grew out of an actual experience I had, a number of years ago.

I should say, by the way, that I love the blues. Listening to almost any music is an emotional experience, but blues music touches me in a way that few other genres can. I love its passion, its honesty and its recognition of our precious, broken humanity. I feel it in my body as well as my soul; when I am listening to the blues, I can’t sit still.

Anyway, one Saturday night my husband and I went to a nearby pub to hear a local blues band we’d read about. They were fantastic. I sat there, entranced, swaying to the beat. Most of the audience were doing the same. Though the place was crowed, some people were even dancing.

Then I noticed a man sitting on a tall stool, not far from our seats, an incredibly handsome black man with a shaved head, high cheekbones and full lips. He wore slim jeans and a white business shirt with rolled up sleeves. One leg was outstretched; the other rested on a rung of his seat. For some reason I noticed his shoes, expensive, highly polished leather that seemed out of place in the casual venue.

He was gorgeous, but he never glanced in my direction. Indeed, what fascinated me about this guy was his utter stillness. Unlike the rest of us, he didn’t tap his toes, nod his head or drum his fingers on this thigh. Totally focused on the stage, he didn’t move a muscle. The intensity with which he regarded the band sent a little chill down my spine. I couldn’t help wondering who this gentleman was, how he happened to be there, and what was going through his mind.

Years later, I can still summon my odd reaction to this guy. He became the model for Remy in Wild About That Thing. Indeed, I borrowed some of that real world scene for the novella.

Of course, I’ll never know what was actually going through that stunning black man’s mind as he stared at the band.

For that, I had to use my imagination.

Excerpt (PG)

He looked pretty good himself. He wore his work clothes—trim navy blue chinos and a striped shirt with a button-down collar. The trousers weren’t as tight as the jeans he wore when he was off-duty, but they couldn’t hide the bulk of his hard-on. His eyes sparkled like sapphires under his bushy blond brows and a lock of his honey-colored hair hung down over his forehead. She fought the urge to brush it back into place.

“I thought maybe I could join you two for dinner,” he continued. “Then maybe after, we can all watch a video or something.”

He didn’t say anything more, but she knew what he was thinking. After Isaiah was safe in his bed, maybe Zeke could spend some time in hers.

Ruby remembered her assignation with Remy—remembered the insane lust he’d inspired. It had been intoxicating, but scary too. For a moment, all she wanted was to say yes to Zeke’s unspoken question, to trade the risky promise of a stranger for more familiar pleasures. But she’d given her word to Remy. Anyway, what gave Zeke the right to barge in to her life, assuming she’d be available?

“We’d love for you eat with us,” she began, trying to be gentle. “But afterward, I’ve got a date.”

Zeke’s forehead knitted into a frown. “A date?” His voice was dark as gathering thunderclouds. “Who with?”

Ruby laid her hand on his arm. That was a mistake. The feel of his warm, firm flesh under the fine cotton made her want to take it all back—to swear that she wanted only him, to beg him to fuck her. “I don’t think you need to know,” she said, her eyes cast downward

She felt like such a traitor. Of course, they’d agreed when they began that their relationship should be non-exclusive. Still, she hadn’t been with anyone else, not for two years. Why should she, when she had a strong, sexy, generous man like Ezekiel Chambers?

But Remy…she’d never experienced anything like the magnetic pull she’d felt in his presence. She had to find out what it would be like to fuck him. To get him out of her system.

“Thanks for being honest,” Zeke said softly. “That’s something at least.”

“I’d never lie to you, baby. That’s just plain wrong. Otis taught me that. It’s just this one time, anyway.”

“You do what you need to do, Ruby. It won’t change how I feel about you.” He blinked once or twice, then stood up. “Guess I should go.”

“No, please—stay for dinner. Just pizza and salad, but we’d love to have you. I’m sure that Isaiah will want to tell you the big news about his band.”

“You sure?”

“Positive.” Ruby gave him a hug, fighting the urge to rub herself against the still-obvious lump in his groin. “Let’s go call Antonio’s.”

“You got someone to stay with the kid while you’re out?” Zeke asked, as Ruby retrieved the pizza menu stuck onto the refrigerator door.

“Um—no… He’ll be okay. It’s just a couple hours.” Ruby’s doubts resurfaced. Maybe she really should call Remy and cancel. Things were just too complicated…

“I’ll hang out here until you get back, then.”

“What?” Ruby stared at him, astonished and grateful. “You’re gonna babysit, while I go meet another man? What are you, some kind of saint?”

“Nah, I’m just a guy who loves you and wants you to be happy. I know you won’t be able to relax if Isaiah’s home alone.”

Ruby rewarded him with a kiss. What had she done to deserve him? “You know me too well, baby.”

“I do, darlin’. You’re like Skynard’s free bird. Ain’t nobody can put you in a cage.”

Guest Post & New Release + a Contest - The Master’s Mark [The Toymakers Guild, bk 3] by Lisabet Sarai @LisabetSarai #steampunk #erotica #menage

Don't let ideas slip away

Blog posts and how-to books aimed at authors often recommend that we keep an idea notebook. “Capture your inspirations when they’re fresh,” the pundits counsel. “Don’t let your ideas slip away.”

For many years, I’ve followed this recommendation. Typically I keep the notebook next to my bed, so that I can jot down the details of dreams that contain the seed of a story. Also, I tend to be more relaxed at night. Sometimes I’ll write a page or two, in longhand, before falling asleep.

It’s not uncommon for me to be fired up, initially, when I come up with a new idea and write it down. When I review my scribbles a few days later, on the other hand, my enthusiasm may have cooled. What seemed like a brilliant premise in the heat of inspiration will strike me as hackneyed or boring. Still, it’s there in the notebook, in case I change my mind.

The concept for the Toymakers Guild series showed up in my notebook way back in 2010. At the time, I was writing – or trying to write – traditional romance for Totally Bound. My original vision of the Guild was quite close to the portrayal in the series, a secretive Victoria-era establishment located in a remote part of England and dedicated to the creation of steampunk sex toys. I knew I’d have characters named Gillian, Amelia and Rafe, though I wasn’t sure who they were. I even had the titles for the series volumes. However, I pictured the series as romance. Each book, I assumed, would focus on a different relationship between a different set of Toymakers. Each book would also deal with the creation of some outrageous sexual artifact for a particular client.

I spent some time thinking about this, but I was busy with other books as well as real world responsibilities, and the momentum slipped away. One problem was that at that time I’d never before been successful in writing a series. I wasn’t confident I could maintain a fictional world over more than one book.

Time passed. I gradually shifted to self-publishing and in the process away from classic romance. Without intending to, I wrote my very successful Vegas Babes erotica series. I started to understand the dynamics of series creation. And I saw that from a commercial perspective, series were the way to go.

Then, late in 2019 I remembered the Toymakers. I dug out the old notebook and read the few pages I’d penned back in 2010. And the creative juices began to flow.

Three years later, I’ve finally completed the Toymakers trilogy. It has diverged dramatically from my original vision, but still, the core concepts haven’t really changed.

If I hadn’t captured those notes, I might well have forgotten about Gillian and her companions out on the Devon moors. I’m grateful I listened to advice!

How do you train a steampunk sexbot?

Gillian Smith’s promotion to journeyman proves she’s ready to lead the Toymakers in producing astonishing new erotic artifacts. Creative, brilliant, and debauched, she’ll stretch her capabilities to the limit as she juggles a talent shortage and a pair of jealous rivals. Then there’s the challenge of their latest commission—a life-sized programmable sex doll intended to replace a client’s deceased paramour.

Normally she would consult the enigmatic Master Toymaker, but he seems preoccupied with his own concerns. Though her lusty crew of sexual renegades can offer technical and carnal assistance, Gillian is ultimately responsible for delivering the promised, near-impossible technology.

It’s fortunate she’s not one to give up—not even when events threaten the Guild’s very survival.

Series Blurb

Defying the repressive morality of the Victorian era, the Toymakers Guild uses advanced technology to fabricate bespoke sexual artifacts for the discrete pleasure of select clients. Its members are not only brilliant engineers but also sexual renegades seeking freedom from the prudish society that surrounds them. These are their stories.

“We design and build custom artefacts for sexual stimulation,” she told him, paying close attention to his reaction.

“You mean, like ‘ladies’ companions’?” He flashed her a mischievous smile. “I’ve seen a few prodigious examples in my travels – ivory, mahogany, even jade.”

“We do produce a wide range of dildos. But we specialise in mechanised items. Vibrating stimulators. Punishment devices. Automata.”

Jeremiah’s eyes gleamed. “Oh, my! That goes beyond even my wildest guesses about your occupation, Jill!” He brushed a casual palm over her breast, now decently hidden. Her nipple snapped to attention. “But now that you’ve revealed your secret, I’m not really surprised. Indeed, I can hardly imagine a more suitable occupation for someone like you.”

He seized her by the shoulders and planted a ferocious kiss on her lips.

“Not that I’ve ever met anyone like you, Jill,” he added with a chuckle.

Rave Reviews for The Toymakers Guild

The Pornographer’s Apprentice,The Toymakers Guild Book 1

There are many more plot points, but I don't want to spoil your enjoyment of this book. It has varied and steamy sex scenes that will take your breath away, a plucky heroine who doesn't always come out on top (ahem), but who always prevails in her quest to be accepted as a Toymaker.  ~ Fiona McGier, Goodreads

With thoughtfully written characters, hot sex scenes, and a well-paced and interesting plot, the Toymaker's Apprentice leaves you asking only one question....when is the next book in the series coming out? ~ The Phantom Tollbooth, Amazon

[A] fast paced, hilarious, and thoroughly entertaining story as Gillian gets intimate with the staff and technology, only to find that there is a plot against the Guild that she takes on to save the day. I can’t wait to read what happens in the next book! ~ Arthur Royo, Amazon

The Journeyman’s Trial, The Toymakers Guild Book 2

Although set in the Victorian era, the denizens of Randerley Hall are thoroughly modern in the enthusiastic and open way they embrace their sexuality, pushing boundaries with the same vigor and gusto they push the boundaries of science. The members of The Guild embrace all manner of delightfully kinky perversions, while making scientific breakthroughs that are far ahead of their time. “The Journeyman’s Trial” has everything—adventure, romance, intrigue, and sizzling sensuality. I highly recommend you take the plunge and dive in. ~ Lawrence Westerman, Amazon

Lisabet Sarai has taken on the challenge of following up The Pornographer's Apprentice. I'm happy to say she's exceeded her own lofty standards of writing. The dialogue in the story is unique, accurate to the era, and oftentimes features beautiful lines. You can look forward to a shocking mass of creativity from the ingenious mind of Miss Sarai. The erotic scenes are written beautifully and explosively. I found the pleasure of the characters hit me just as hard as it hit them. I'm looking forward to more from this world and the characters! ~ Amazon Customer, Verified Purchaser

New Release and Guest Post - Once Upon a Blizzard - by Lisabet Sarai @LisabetSarai #secondchance #mmf #bisexual #holidayromance

 Old Flames

For most of us, high school is a time of sexual awakening. With all the hormones pouring into our blood, we’re in a near-constant state of excitement. I don’t know how kids are now, but during my high school years, my “sexual” experiences were limited to some steamy kisses and groping. Still, everyone around me seemed to have a heightened awareness of desire, although we knew very little about the details. Flirtation, teasing, crushes, fantasies, conspiracies – every interaction felt edged with erotic possibilities, even if most of these never materialized.

I remember that period with aching affection. In later years, when I’ve reconnected with some of my old flames, I’ve found the original heat still simmered in the background. Most of us are married now, some more than once. There’s no chance of consummating the old adolescent lust, even if it were reciprocal. But somehow, for me at least, the original thrill hasn’t totally dissipated.

Once Upon a Blizzard was loosely inspired by actual relationships from my high school years. As described in the story, there was in fact a triangle involving me and two of my male classmates  (though I’m pretty sure that they didn’t have any homoerotic connection). For a time, I was the girlfriend of the taller, more popular, more alpha of the two guys, but I’ve often thought I might have made the wrong choice – especially after he dumped me, exactly as described in the book.

Writing this second-chance romance gave me the opportunity to imagine what might have happened between the beta guy and me, if we’d had the chance to revisit our old connection.

X-rated Excerpt (MMF)

Harris urged Gino onto his hands and knees, crosswise on the king-sized bed. Kneeling behind, he pulled the globes of Gino’s butt apart and wiggled his fingers back into the hole between them. “Still loose and juicy,” he commented.

Oh, yeah,” breathed Gino. “Take me, lover.”

Harris stroked his cock a few times then placed the knob against stretched ring of muscle and pushed. He held Gino open so that Suzanne could see the rigid length of flesh disappearing inch by inch into Gino’s back passage.

Oh, God!” Gino gasped as Harris filled him.

Oh God!” echoed Suzanne, as her pussy clenched and her rear hole twitched with sympathetic pleasure.

Harris grasped Gino’s hips and pumped his cock in and out. Gino relaxed and let Harris take him over. Gino’s swollen cock jutted underneath him, bouncing against his belly each time Harris thrust into his ass. Suzanne ached to feel that bulk inside her. But she was the guest here—this was Harris’ turf and she had to let him call the shots.

She slipped two fingers into her wet sex, hoping that the men wouldn’t mind, and frigged herself in time with Harris’ strokes. As Harris picked up speed, she did also, skirting close to the edge of climax. Then she backed off. She wanted to come with Gino inside her. She only hoped she’d get the chance soon.

Harris paused as if he had read her mind. He shifted position, kneeling back onto his heels and dragging Gino, still impaled, onto his lap. Gino’s thighs splayed out on either side of his lover’s. His erection pointed straight at the ceiling.

Climb on,” Harris instructed. “We’ll see if he can handle both of us.”

Suzanne didn’t need a second invitation. She clambered over to their joined bodies, squatted above Gino’s tempting bulk and settled down, swallowing him with her pussy.

Gino gasped as her heat enfolded him. He grabbed her shoulders, pulling her into a frantic kiss. Meanwhile, Harris flexed his thighs and drove his cock up into Gino’s ass. The force sent Gino’s rod deeper into Suzanne’s body. Suzanne rocked in Gino’s lap, her hands on his shoulders, her feet braced against Harris’ thighs. The blond man didn’t seem to mind. He just picked up the pace, ramming hard and fast into Gino’s body and sending Gino’s cock careening into her body in reaction.

Gino looked dazed. His lips were parted, hoarse breath forced out with each thrust. His hair was plastered on his sweaty forehead. Harris clasped him around the waist with strong, wiry arms. Every so often Suzanne felt the artist’s long fingers circle the base of Gino’s cock and give it a squeeze, brushing her cunt lips in the process and sending high voltage sizzling up her spine.
