Is she a ghost? A visitor from another time and place? A siren? A temptress? Or just a meddling dream mistress?

Seren has bided her time for centuries, waiting for the moment when two of her descendants fall in love and release her, finally, from the place between worlds. The many gifts Seren has inherited from her ancestors—time travel, entering dreams, telepathic communication—have been unsuccessful thus far. Will Gwen and Dante be the ones?

Gwen McFarland has always been in touch with her Celtic roots. When Seren—who looks to Gwen like a Celtic goddess—materializes and invites her to a love tryst in another time and place, she does not hesitate. That Seren sometimes brings along another woman is simply an added benefit.

Fast paced trial lawyer Dante Emmanuel has no time for sentimentality or relationships. A string of satisfying sexual encounters suits him just fine. He’s mystified when a recurring figure enters his dream life, but he won’t turn down Seren’s exotic sexual talents or the dreams that now seem more real than ever.

Who will make the first move in this three-part game of chess? Timing is everything.

Across the Boundaries of Time and Space - by Adriana Kraft

What are your favorite paranormal features in erotic romance? I’m especially fascinated with time travel – perhaps to an earlier era in our own world, or perhaps even to an unknown world. If you’ve ever meditated to a trance state, studied shamanism, learned Reiki, or joined a drumming circle, you may have sampled experiences that have this quality, even if you never physically left the space where you sat.

As best we can learn in the modern era, the Celts of northwest Europe and the British Isles accepted such experiences as common. With great ritual and effort, they believed they could cast themselves to another location and interact with the people there. Sometimes they could bring back a physical object from the other dimension, and in times of great danger, perhaps even a person.

This form of time travel was one of the Celtic gifts my husband and I bestowed on Seren when we were crafting this series. In her life during the third century AD, Seren was able to communicate with her deceased grandmother, and she could visit her daughter across time and space, appearing in the daughter’s dreams. Trapped between worlds since her death, she retains these abilities.

We chose to treat this gift as something handed down across the centuries in the DNA of Seren’s descendants. Some may have carried only a trace, while in others the gift was more concentrated. For some, perhaps a wise teacher was available to help them hone and amplify the gift. For a few across the millennia, Seren became the teacher, traveling across time and space to join them.

In From Beyond the Curtain, Seren’s Welsh descendant Gwen is so richly gifted she has already time traveled before our story opens. Dante, on the other hand, treats any such experience as merely a dream, though he’d love to have more of them.

Our three characters still have much to learn about what they can and cannot do in such travels. What are the rules? What do Gwen and Dante bring back from their other world encounters? And for Seren, are the gods who unfairly trapped her between worlds still playing with her? To say more would be to create spoilers.

Chapter One

Inhaling the strange yet familiar exotic scent, Gwen McFarland stretched her naked body to its full length and ran her fingers through her hair. She loved this place, though she didn't know exactly where it was. She beamed at her phantom lover, whom she'd visited off and on for over a year now, though she still had little idea who Seren might actually be. Seren was real. That was all that mattered. It didn't matter that Seren was from beyond the curtain—somehow beyond the veil of time and space. Gwen herself had come by time travel naturally. It was in her blood, in her Celtic roots.

She'd time traveled before Seren had beckoned her to this small cottage by an oak grove—a collection of giant, ancient oaks, so different from the sere desert of Gwen’s native Arizona. She’d never seen anything like them.

She'd had lovers in other times and other places. With few exceptions, they'd been female lovers. Most had only sought her out once or twice. Seren was different. Gwen had been called to the grove seven times, and Seren had visited Gwen in her own time and place twice. Gwen shivered slightly. She hadn't expected any of her time travel lovers to come to her. That wasn’t the way it worked. But she knew she hadn't dreamed Seren's presence. Seren was as real as anyone she knew, in whatever time or space.

Today? Today was even more unusual. All other times, Seren had appeared at night in Gwen’s dream and joined her there or traveled with her to the grove. This morning, Gwen had been at her desk, awaiting her next physical therapy client, when she’d suddenly found herself here in bed with Seren—and now it felt as if they’d made passionate, exquisite love all night.

Resist, or yield? The choice is not Seren’s alone.

Late in the Roman occupation of Britain, a young Welsh tribeswoman is hand selected and captured to serve as a courtesan to a Roman Legate and his wife. Escape proves impossible, but Seren is never completely abandoned. Her grandmother’s cryptic prophecy through their psychic connection seals her fate—it will be Seren’s lot to yield. The words both relieve Seren and further mystify her: You must find pleasure in your present life. Fulfillment will not be yours until after you cross into the next.

Off and on for the last several months, I’ve been devouring fiction set in the first four centuries AD, focused on the Celtic peoples and the Roman occupation of Britain. So it’s probably no accident that sometime last winter, my husband and I unearthed a plot fragment we’d played with and never followed up on: What if a young Welsh tribeswoman was captured by a high-ranking Roman soldier to be a courtesan for him and his wife, and was separated forever from her only child, a daughter? And then, what if it’s her task across time to re-unite her family through bringing together a descendant of her daughter and a descendant of her subsequent Roman son?

Seren’s Story, a two book erotic romance series, is the result. Book One, the short story Two Seeds are Sown, has just been released at Extasy Books, and Book Two, From Beyond the Curtain, will follow in July.

When the Romans invaded the British Isles, they began in the south and reached what is now Wales in about 48 AD. The wild tribes they encountered there presented some of their fiercest early opposition. Welsh folklore has immortalized one of the last Welsh resistors to yield to the Romans: Caractacus (or Caradoc),the leader of the Silures tribe, who lived in southeast Wales in the lowlands along the northern shore of the Bristol Channel.

To subdue the indigenous Welsh peoples, the Romans established forts, built roads so they could rapidly move their armies, and developed one town. Venta Silurum was located in what is now Caerwent, a mile or two off the channel and roughly 8 miles east of Newport. Caractacus himself was ultimately captured and taken to Rome, where he died in 54 AD.

We’ve found nothing to indicate whether or not he left children behind in Wales, but we’ve chosen to believe he must have done so. In our fictional account, Seren’s father is a local Silures chieftain directly descended from Caractacus, who lived over a century earlier. Seren has inherited not only his standing and his fierce determination, but also several psychic gifts from her grandmother, including divination, the ability to time travel, and metaphysical communication with others. These characteristics and talents form the kernel from which our story has grown.

R RATED

Set Up: It’s been three days of arduous travel since Seren was captured, but she now stands in a lavish stone bath with the wife of her captor…

Once they’d stepped out of the water and toweled off, Livia pointed out two gold bands on the nearby shelf. “You will wear the smaller bracelet around your left ankle and the larger band around your throat. As you can see, they are beautifully adorned with our family crest. No one of Roman descent will dare touch you without my consent.”

Seren stood perfectly still as the woman attached the bracelet and the torc.

Livia grinned at her. “You could waste hours trying to get them off—hours you should be thinking about me. Now then, for the time being, you will not be given your own room. You will either sleep with me, with my husband, Scipio, or with both of us. Understand?”

Seren nodded. She listened carefully to her fate. Escape would be difficult. And she couldn’t even try until she’d earned a degree of trust.

“You will have no household duties,” Livia continued, “other than to tend to my boudoir and baths. I will instruct you further in our language to improve your fluency. I will teach you board games, more of Roman culture—you will want to blend in when we return to Rome. And of course I will teach you more of the refined arts of lovemaking. I would also like to hear about your mystic religion. It sounds so fanciful compared to ours, but I have an eager mind.”

Danger signals flared in Seren’s brain, but she kept her face carefully schooled. Sharing a few harmless tidbits might be a way to humor her captor and perhaps build trust. But what did Livia already know? She and her husband weren’t far off the mark—Seren knew for a fact she was special.

Seren’s father had made this clear. She’d been given special training as a woman because of her gifts. Her father had taught her that long before her time, the Romans had massacred all the Druids they could find, but her father was not her only teacher. From her grandmother she’d learned that the Romans would never succeed in stamping out the magical gifts—the powers that often passed from mother to daughter or to granddaughter, or rarely, to sons. The powers Seren’s grandmother had passed to her. Seren vowed never to let Livia know any of this.
