Excerpt from THE DUKE’S LADY

Images filled her dark world.
First, a flash of blue—beautiful, tranquil—then flashes of white as two ships bobbed like tiny corks in the middle of a stormy sapphire sea. Billowing canvas sails flapped in the wind, catching her attention just before someone yelled, “Come about!”
Suddenly, a loud explosion jarred her, followed by shouts of panic from all directions. The sails came tumbling down, and she saw blood . . . lots of blood.
Jewel tossed and turned in her fever-induced sleep, trying to cry for help, but the sound wouldn’t come.
Somewhere a man screamed in agony. Blood oozed between his fingers as he turned and glared at her. She gasped at the sight. His cheek had been ripped open from his mouth to his ear.
The grotesque face was too close for comfort as he reached out and grabbed her wrist, sending the small, bloody knife she held skittering across the deck. Jewel tried to swing out, but someone held her arms. She couldn’t move.
She couldn’t breathe.
She was going to die.
When she looked again, her attacker had disappeared, and Jewel slipped back into the timeless void she’d been in before.
Peaceful sleep ... no pain. Such a blissful state. She wanted to stay here forever.
She felt something cool on her forehead, and her eyelids fluttered open and she found herself staring into the Devil’s black eyes. Her bottom lip quivered as she pleaded, “Please, don’t hurt me.”
The words had barely been uttered before she drifted back into a foggy state of sleep. She felt the comfort and warmth of the Devil, and vaguely heard his softly spoken words, which left her with a feeling of contentment.
Strong arms cradled her close, yet she sensed those same arms were capable of crushing the very life from her body. But for now they offered her comfort.

Normandie Alleman's Rescued by the Buccaneer @NormandieA

Writing Historicals and Researching Clothespins

Thanks so much HK for having me today on Pick A Genre Already. What a perfect place to talk about writing in a different genre. My new release, Rescued by the Buccaneer, is an erotic historical novel that follows the adventures of Frederica and the pirate she meets aboard the Neptune’s Damnation. I have been writing erotic romance for a couple of years but this book is my first historical erotic romance. As a reader I’ve always been drawn to historical fiction and historicals are my favorite movies to watch, so I knew I would eventually write about days gone by but it took the concept of sexy pirates to help me make that leap. Once I got started I became addicted, and I’m now obsessed with all things pirate-y.

I’ve also learned that writing historical fiction takes more time than writing contemporary because of the research, and you never know when you’re going to need to research something. It just pops up on you. For example, my characters are usually a bit kinky and when I realized there was no way they could use nipple clamps I did some research. Sadly, clothespins were not invented until 50 years later so my couple had to forego that whole idea. The upside was that I remembered that pirate ships have lots of rope and they used candles for lighting back then, which allowed my characters to still get creative in the bedroom.

Here’s more about Rescued by the Buccaneer, the first in the Pirates of the Jolie Rouge Trilogy:

When Frederica Beauchamp boards a ship for the Americas, she dreams of a life filled with adventure, but she gets more than she bargained for when her passenger ship is attacked by pirates.  The heartless men kidnap her and force her to serve their captain—a fate that might be worse than death, since though he does not have his way with her, the captain delights in baring her, shaming her, and thrashing her bare bottom as punishment for every imagined disobedience.

After the pirates bring aboard an injured man found floating in the sea, Frederica tends to his wounds and learns that he is Gaston Galette, a survivor of a shipwrecked vessel. Gaston seeks her help to overthrow the vile captain, but when their plan goes awry he is forced to use all of his wiles to save them. As the naïve girl and the seasoned sailor navigate one perilous situation after another, he informs Frederica that the only way they can survive is if he is in command, and that if she thinks things can be otherwise, she will be taken over his knee for a bare bottom spanking.

As he watches the proud, willful Frederica bow to his authority, however, Gaston worries that her growing hold on his heart will be his downfall. He knows he cannot take a woman with him when he returns to his ship and crew, but when Frederica accepts his lustful dominance completely, submitting to him with grace and beauty no other woman could match, Gaston realizes that he may never be able to let her go.

Publisher’s Note: Rescued by the Buccaneer is the first book of the Pirates of the Jolie Rouge trilogy. It is an adventure and erotic romance novel that includes spankings, sexual scenes including elements of BDSM and humiliation, and more. If such material offends you, please don’t buy this book.

Excerpt:

In this scene Frederica has been captured by pirates and her wrists are restrained in iron shackles and Bradford, the bosun has taken her to the ship’s blacksmith to have them removed.

“What have we here?” Morgan asked.

“We need you to cut these shackles from her wrists,” Bradford said.

Morgan glared at Frederica, though he spoke to the bosun. “Captain alright w’dat?”

Bradford nodded. “Not like she’s going anywhere.”

Morgan snickered at the joke. “Alright. Set your arm here on me forge, wench.”

Frederica stiffened, not used to being addressed in this manner, but she knelt beside the large metal slab and placed her right arm upon it.

Morgan dragged out some tools and rotated her arm so as the hinge of the bracelet faced upwards. He set the coal chisel to the hinge and struck it with his hammer.

Frederica’s bloodcurdling scream rang throughout the ship. Good Lord, the man might smash her arm to bits! Panic overtook her and she begged him to stop.

“Frederica, calm yerself,” Bradford placed a comforting arm on her shoulder.

Heavy footsteps were followed by the appearance of an imposing figure hulked in the door frame, taking up most of the space. She recognized him as the pirate in charge during the raid on the Adelaide.

“What is the meaning of this?” the Captain barked.

“Trying to remove her shackles and she’s scared,” Bradford said sheepishly.

“Of what?” the Captain boomed.

“I guess that he’ll harm her during the proceeding,” Bradford said.

“Nonsense!” The Captain focused his attention on Frederica. “I’m Captain Humphrey, lass, and you’re my prisoner. You will do as I say, hear?”

Frederica nodded.

“Commence,” Humphrey said to Morgan, who took another swing with his hammer.

As much as she tried not to, Frederica squealed again. She was petrified that the man was going to smash her wrist. There was no guarantee his aim was sound, and he used so much force her whole arm quaked with each blow.

“That’s enough. I’ll not have ye making all that racket, girl,” the Captain said. “Don’t make me sorry I saved your ass. I can always feed ye to the fishies.” He chuckled at this idea. “Stuff a rag in her mouth, Bradford.”

Bradford pulled a rag from his pocket and approached Frederica.

She widened her eyes, pleading with him not to do it.

“Open,” Bradford said.

If she refused, she feared they’d break her arm for spite. Seeing no alternative she complied. She bit down on the rag and her face pulled back in a grimace when the unfamiliar, bitter taste from the cloth registered in her brain. Morgan struck the chisel again against the metal, this time her cries were muffled by the makeshift gag.

Humphrey laughed. “That’s more like it.” He walked over and pinched her cheek hard. “I’ll be seein’ ye later, Lassy.”
