I’d always thought it was sweet that she had a crush on me. Yeah, I knew. You’d have to be blind not to see that. It gave me a giant ego boost. But I never encouraged it. I kept things professional. But in the last few weeks, I’d learned so much more about her. Gotten to really know her. It had become personal. I shouldn’t have let it, but it was impossible. She was an incredible person. She was innocent and sweet. Giving and forgiving. Young in some ways, but so mature in others. She was caught in this world not of her making, trying her damnedest to live a good life and be a good person. And what did it get her? Why were we sitting here like this? 

 I rested my forehead on her arm as I played with her fingers. “Holly,” I called for the hundredth time. The nurse said to talk to her, and physical stimulation might help too, to bring her out of the unconsciousness. I ran my fingertips softly up and down her arm.

“God! Holly! Please wake up!” I hadn’t prayed in…Well, I’m not sure if I’ve ever actually prayed for anything in my life. But I asked whoever was up there looking after beautiful souls like hers to please bring her back. She had so much to give, so much life to live. She was so incredibly smart and good. Would God not want her here doing the good things only she could do? Please send her back to me. I’ll change. I’ll try to be good. Like her. For her. Please. My eyes stung.

Every one has their idea of what home means and what it means when they’ve found that one special lover. It can be in a log cabin, a space ship or a home built for that love. It can be near or far, on this world or even another.

A snippet from mob romance, Always Cambridge...

Bodyguard Randy Phillips observes his charge... while ever so slowly, losing his heart.... 

Holly slaved all day in the kitchen. We’d gone grocery shopping and she’d bought enough food to feed an army. Her army, her troop of misfit Cambridges, myself included. She cooked a fantastic meal for all the guys who either didn’t have family, or didn’t have a place to go, or the ones that couldn’t be with their families because they had to be here at work protecting the Cambridge on Christmas. She was pretty ticked about that.  

The smells coming from the kitchen were incredible. My stomach growled in anticipation. I sat at one of the computers just off the kitchen. I placed myself there strategically so I could see her coming and going from the kitchen to the dining room table and back again. I actually thought about getting her lap top so that I could sit right in there, but I'd only be in the way. And I thought I was being a little pathetic too, just wanting to be near her.

She was the perfect hostess. She made every wise-guy there feel comfortable and at home. She served and fetched for everyone. I found myself watching her everywhere she went. She laughed and she joked. She knew individual things about every one of these guys so that she could hold a conversation with each of them. She knew all of their kid’s names. And more stuff about them that I didn’t even know. These guys were not just here to protect her. We weren’t just employees to her. She cared about us. She made us her family.  

A family. That was what she wanted, a family to love and to love her in return. She craved it from her father and her sister. From me. She wanted to be cared about. She wanted to look after people and have them look after her out of mutual feeling. I knew what that was like. To feel alone, like no one cared. There was no one to take care of her. Maybe that was why she and I had always clicked. Even when she was so young, we just wanted desperately for someone to give a shit about us. I ached for her. 

After supper was over and dessert had been cleared away, all the guys pitched in to help clean up and I watched her glow with happiness at the normalcy of it. These hardened callous men up to their elbows in sudsy water doing dishes and snapping tea towels at one another.
